Early Days: The original inspiration for Lilliput Lane and its remarkable range of models was the vernacular architecture of Britain - In particular, the cottages that give the British countryside the character and charm that enchant visitors from all over the world. Lilliput Lane's founder, artist and Technical Director, David Tate, describes vernacular architecture as 'the buildings built by the people for the people with the materials that lay around them. It was his enduring passion for these humble yet delightful dwellings that was eventually to find expression in the countless exquisitive models produced at Lilliput.
David Tate is a Yorkshireman, and has the strong passions, direct manner and determination for which is countryman are renowned, along with a ready sense of humour. The passion is clear when he talks of the cottages he loves, and the success of Lilliput Lane is attributable in no small part to his determination, tenacity and sheer energy.
Lilliput Lane started producing their miniature cottages in 1982 from workshops at Skirsgill, in England's Lake District, and the company has remained in the area ever since. The majority of cottages are based on real cottages, with collections based not only on British Cottages, but also American, and in the past German, Dutch and French Cottages.
The cottages have attracted a worldwide audience and with regular retirements and new issues, there is a lot of demand for earlier and rarer cottages. There is also popular Visitors Centre, with a museum and showroom.
